Image
The sharing session was conducted on the 9 th of November in the Auditorium of the Geology Museum in Bandung and was open to the public in general. Before the start of the sharing session, a video about the Kars Rajamandala area by the Board of Geology was shown to the audience. Fossils and pre-historical records have been found in Gua Pawon, one of the caves in the area. However, the area is being threatened by mining activities around it. The video shows just how important the area is and that we should mitigate its threats to preserve it. The sharing session started with an introduction of BDSG and what we do, which is to Learn, Share, and Volunteer. We explained our activities such as sharing sessions, school sessions, DRR-Young Exchange Program, and Campaigns, as well as our upcoming activities. After that the audience was asked to participate in an ice breaking game which is called the Bosai Duck, which is also a game that is used as a teaching method about disa...

Learning Session with Pak Hamzah

Disasters happen when hazards meet vulnerability . As long as this condition is not fulfilled, disasters can be avoided. A hazard itself can take the form of a tsunami, storm, as well as others. The threat can be classified based on how long it takes place. There are slow disasters such as famine and drought, which happens in a long period of time and tend to affect the capacity of readily available food supplies, as well as fast disasters such as a tsunami, which happens in a relatively short time span. Vulnerability can mean physical vulnerability such as topography, the use of land, and infrastructure, as well as social and economical vulnerabilities faced by people living near the area. It is the poor who rely on a daily income that are most vulnerable, because when a disaster happens, they will not be able to work and will lose their daily income . An example regarding vulnerability would be the town of Padang. Geographically, it is an area with a high risk of landslides. However,...

Sesi Belajar Bencana bersama Pak Hamzah

Afternoon Talk on Japan's recent Earthquake and Introduction of BDSG in ITB

Last Wednesday, 23 March 2011, KM (Keluarga Mahasiswa) ITB invited BDSG and students of ITB in a presentation on Japan's recent earthquake in Kanto-Tohoku region by an exchange student from Waseda University, Yuya Kishimoto, followed by the commencement of donation activities for Japan in ITB. Our group BDSG was given a chance to present in the beginning of the Afternoon Talk. On behalf of BDSG, Mizan, our coordinator, gave the introduction of BDSG with its mission and activities. Yuya talked about the history of earthquakes in Japan as the opening remarks of his presentation. He further highlighted the positive Japanese spirit which supports them in facing the disaster. The proofs of this Japanese spirit were found through the statements collected through twitter. In the discussion, several questions were raised regarding this, such as whether this disaster affects Japanese beliefs about God, how the Japanese people could establish such positive behavior (e.g. being tolerant t...
