BDSG-Bina Swadaya DRR Education at School

Saturday, 7 March 2015

Following the Training for Trainer(TFT) that BDSG and Bina Swadaya have conducted in October 2014, the DRR Education at school today took place in SDN Mekarsari 3 Depok, West Java. The school was selected because the location is close to Bina Swadaya office and the flood usually happens during the rainy season.  The school session involved 9 volunteers of BDSG and 15 facilitators from Bina Swadaya.

The session started at 08.30 am, around 70 of 5th grade students gathered on the school field for introduction and ice breaking. In this session the students played some games and were divided into 8 groups named after animals; Chicken, Tiger, Cow, Wolf, Duck, Goat, Cat,and Horse.

The ice breaking
After the ice breaking, the groups were separated into 3 classrooms to start the sessions with volunteers and the facilitators. Today, we have 3 materials to share in the sessions. The first is the introduction of disaster. The students learned about earthquake, volcano, landslide and flood. They payed a good attention on the materials, shown by their active response to the presenter. The second material is Bosai Duck. Bosai Duck is a fun method originally from Japan and adopted by BDSG to learn how to respond to disaster. The students looked excited in dancing and practicing the movements of disaster response in Bosai Duck. The third material is School Watching at SDN Mekarsari 3. The students were guided to assess and know more about their environment by mapping the vulnerable, safe and favorite spots around the school area.

Class session of Introduction to Disasters
By identfying some important spots at school, students are expected to be aware of their environment so that they can respond immediately when disaster occurs

At the last part of the session, the students gathered at the field again to give presentation to the school teachers and headmaster about their school mapping activity. Each representative of the groups told about where the important spots are, and explained why some spots are vulnerable. As explained by the students, the headmaster could understand what the students need and will consider various actions that could make the school safer. Good communication was built between the students and the teachers.

Overall, BDSG and Bina Swadaya’s school session at SDN Mekarsari today was really good! The students were so active and excited, the teachers were cooperative to facilitate the classes and support the activity. Last but not least thanks to all BDSG volunteers(Inoel, Oya, Laksma, Ika, Danti, Fajar, Ina, Caca, Adhit) and facilitators from Bina Swadaya(Mba Dian and friends) for their valuable efforts.

See you on the next School Session!
